Durham face Derbyshire Falcons in final T20 of the season

Durham’s Vitality Blast campaign comes to an end this afternoon when they take on Derbyshire Falcons at The Incora County Ground starting at 2:30pm.

An unchanged 13 player squad has been named as Durham head to Derbyshire today in their final Blast game of the season.

Durham are not able to qualify for the quarter finals but face a Falcons side who have already secured qualification into the knockout stages. With the North group tight at the top depending on today’s result and how other results go in the North group, a home quarter final is still a possibility for the hosts.

Durham remain in 8th place in the North group with 7 points.

Squad v Derbyshire Falcons

Scott Borthwick, Brydon Carse, Graham Clark, Paul Coughlin, Ned Eckersley, Michael Jones, Stanley Mcalindon, Ben Raine, Ollie Robinson +, Nathan Sowter, Liam Trevaskis, Ashton Turner*, Andrew Tye.

Words from Ashton Turner

“Clearly we have not played to our high expectations this campaign and the result against Notts was another disappointment. We felt at the start of the T20 ths year that we had the right core of players to be competitive but it hasn’t turned out that way.
There are a few contributory factors – guys getting picked for the Tests and England duties, but we can be proud of that. Also a couple of injuries, not only to myself that kept me out of a few matches but to David Bedingham, one of our overseas who played most of the tournament carrying an injury which prevented him playing to his best.
There are quality teams all round in this competition and you have to be at your best. But I think Durham can surely hang their hat on especially their fast-bowling programme which is something to be really proud of, Matty Potts being just the latest to benefit England. So there are real compensations this year for all we’ve had a poor T20″

Derbyshire Falcons

Pedigree: Derbyshire don’t have the best record in T20 cricket, having only progressed from the group stage three times in the competition’s history, however under new boss Micky Arthur they may have turned a corner this summer and qualified for the quarter finals.  Most recently they made it to finals day in 2019 where they fell short to eventual winners Essex. They have however brought Scottish international Mark Watt back to the club who was part of their side in 2019, who is hoping to go a couple of steps further than they did three years ago.

Dangerman: Pakistani opening batsman Shan Masood has had a stunning start to the 2022 season for Derbyshire scoring 713 runs in the month of April with two double centuries and his lowest score 42 after six innings. He has a respectable T20 record too with an average of just above 25 with 103* his highest T20 score to date. With Masood being available for the T20 season he should certainly be one to watch out for.

Rising Star: Nick Potts could be someone to keep an eye on this summer following an impressive start to his red ball career at the start of this season taking seven wickets from his opening two games at 27.28. The 19-year-old featured for England Lions in 2020 taking three wickets in that fixture and will be hoping to continue his breakout season for Derbyshire

Last Visit: The Falcons’ last trip to Chester-Le-Street ended in a final ball defeat for Durham with form continuing to stutter. Durham batted first as Graham Clark blasted 26 runs from just 10 deliveries with Raine, Dickson and Borthwick all scoring 30+. However, Durham’s consistent loss of wickets saw them struggle towards the climax of the innings as they posted 176/9. In reply,  Derbyshire batted similarly, losing a couple of early wickets and a couple more in the middle overs. Durham had edged the game up until the death overs where they capitulated as Critchley and Guest fired the visitors to victory.
