Durham Cricket Foundation Expands its Hospital Programme Delivery to Support More Young Patients

The Foundation’s programme, which runs in partnership with Newcastle Hospitals Charity, is increasing sessions from two to three days per week to support more young people facing long-term hospital stays.

Delivered at the Bridges School, the Great North Children’s Hospital and Freeman Hospital, where the initiative has been running for six years, it provides one-to-one coaching and tailored activities for children and young people receiving care.

The programme, which has been running successfully twice a week, focuses on using cricket-inspired activities to encourage movement, stimulate learning and bring moments of enjoyment to patients during what can often be a challenging and isolating time.

With the move to three weekly sessions, the Foundation aims to reach even more young patients, offering consistent support that helps build confidence, spark curiosity and create a sense of achievement.

Coaching staff work closely with each individual, adapting sessions to suit their physical ability, energy levels, and personal interests. Activities are designed not only to support physical wellbeing but also to contribute to emotional resilience and mental engagement.

Graeme Weeks, Chief Executive Officer at Durham Cricket Foundation said: “Expanding this programme means we can be there for more young people when they need it most. It’s about creating positive moments, building confidence, and helping them feel connected and supported, even during difficult times.”

The Bridges School plays a key role in ensuring that children in hospital can continue their education and the partnership with Durham Cricket Foundation adds a valuable physical and wellbeing dimension to their learning experience.

Andy McDonnell, Business Manager at the Great North Children’s Hospital said: “This partnership brings real value to our patients, supporting their recovery and wellbeing throughout their hospital stay. Thanks to the support of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, we are incredibly pleased to announce the expansion of this service and recognise the importance of our strategic partnership with Durham Cricket Foundation”.

The expansion reflects the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to making cricket accessible and impactful beyond traditional settings, using the sport as a tool to improve lives and strengthen communities across the North East.
