Durham CCC defeated by Kent CCC

As Kent resumed their first innings, Darren Steven’s picked up the single required to pass the hundred mark, before he was bowled by Mitchell Claydon on 102.  Kent were all out for 320, having established a 199 run lead, after Ntini was caught at slip by Gareth Breese off Plunkett for 7.

Kyle Coetzer was the first of Makhaya Ntini’s six wickets of the innings when he was trapped lbw for 4 when Durham had 10 on the board.

The hosts were 27-2 once Scott Borthwick was caught behind off Khan for 1.  With Michael Di Venuto continuing steadily, Durham were 50-3 once Dale Benkenstein, who added 7, was caught behind off Cook.

At lunch Durham were 59-3 with Di Venuto (38*) and Breese (5*) at the crease with the latter dismissed immediately after the break when he was caught and bowled by Khan.

Michael Di Venuto passed the fifty mark, which included four boundaries, having faced 104 balls.  Geraint Jones picked up his third catch, his second off Cook , dismissing Phil Mustard for 16 and bringing the injured Ben Stokes to the crease with Durham 91-5.

Stokes, who had severely sprained his ankle on day one of the game, came to the middle with Scott Borthwick as his runner.  Stokes and Di Venuto pushed the total past the 150 mark and their partnership passed 50.

Stokes went on to contribute a 39 ball fifty, which included eight fours and a maximum before he was bowled by Ntini with Durham trailing Kent’s first innings total by 27.  Liam Plunkett returned to the pavilion without adding to the total, bringing Claydon to the middle to join Di Venuto, who became Ntini’s fourth victim when he was caught by Tredwell on 86.

The South African paceman went on to clear up the tail, trapping both Chris Rushworth and Stephen Harmison lbw for 0.  Durham were all out for 195, losing the match by an innings and four runs.
