Durham and Somerset Play out Draw

Durham and Somerset have both taken 9 points away from their LV=CC match at Taunton with the match ending in a draw.

The draw looked ominous at the start of day four after the prior three days saw over 800 runs scored by both teams on a batting friendly pitch.

Durham had other ideas early on the final day however and were after quick wickets with the day starting well for the visitors after speedster Mark Wood dismissed he dangerous Nick Compton to have Somerset 43-1.

Scott Borthwick then bowled Trescothick for 25 and the spinner was in on the action in the field shortly after, taking a superb catch to give Buckley Durham’s third wicket with Somerset 76-3 with a lead of just 41.

Somerset then steadied with a 56-run partnership before Mark Wood was again amongst the wickets dismissing Elgar for 31 with Borthwick again in on the dismissal taking the catch.

Somerset continued to be resisilent at the crease and Barrow and Trego put on 83 runs to halt the Durham momentum.

Ben Stokes finally got the breakthrough when he trapped Trego lbw for 38 and Graham Onions got two quick wickets, firstly dismissing Meschede caught behind and then bowling Dockwell to give Durham another sniff to potentially chase runs down in the last session.

However Barrow who finished 83no and Overton 12no remained strong at the crease to deny Durham anymore wickets.

Players shook hands for the draw just before 5pm with both teams taking away 9 points from the clash.

Durham still sit fourth on the Championship table and will be looking for maximum points next week when they take on Warwickshire at Emirates Durham ICG starting Wednesday.
