Comprehensive Victory for Durham

Durham have comprehensively defeated Scotland in today’s Father’s Day Yorkshire Bank 40 match at Emirates Durham ICG.

Scotland won the toss and elected to bat and may have regretted the choice with the visitors struggling from the first over to play the Durham attack who were fresh from a win in the LVCC on Friday afternoon.

The in-form Graham Onions got the ball rolling, striking in his second over dismissing Coleman who edged to the hands of Phil Mustard behind the stumps.

Scotland steadied at the crease but didn’t trouble the scoreboard too much and it wasn’t until the 10th over Durham struck again when speedster Mark Wood had Berrington caught behind.

Onions then got two wickets in two balls, firstly dismissing MacLeod, another Scottish batsman to push one through to Mustard, and then claiming the wicket of Mommsen who picked out Chris Rushworth to leave Onions on a hat-trick.

Scotland managed to deny Onions a hat-trick but it wasn’t soon after the Durham attack once again struck with Wood getting his second for the day bowling Iqbal for a duck to leave them 39-5 in the 12th over.

Scotland opener and New Zealand Test squad member Tom Latham provided the only resistance in the Scotland innings and he too found his way back to the change rooms in the 18th over after making 30 before Wood got his third wicket after the opener picked out Rushworth in the field.

Ben Stokes then came into the attack and had immediate effect removing Leask for 4 as he hit straight to skipper Mark Stoneman leaving Scotland 65-7.

Paul Collingwood then came on and showed his wicket taking abilities snaring two wickets in his first over, bowling both Cross (12) and Smith (6) leaving Scotland 78-9.

Collingwood then put the final nail in the visitors coffin when he struck a third time with the last man in Gordon Drummond hitting one up high in the air to find a running Scott Borthwick leaving Scotland all out in the 24th over for 91.

The Durham reply started reasonably well with opener Mustard striking three boundaries early and looking to move things along in a hurry until he mistimed one and departed in the third over for 15.

Mark Stoneman carried on his good form with some fine shots to keep the scoreboard ticking over until he was trapped lbw by MacLeod for 22 with Durham 49-2.

Durham were within 25 runs of victory when number three Scott Borthwick drove one through to the slips to depart for 17 in the 10th over.

It was then left to Paul Collingwood and Ben Stokes to steer Durham to victory with Stokes smashing three boundaries in the 13th over to hand Durham a 7 wicket win.

Next up Durham face Hampshire in what will potentially be a top-of-the-table clash.
