Claydon set for second stint in New Zealand

This is your second stint with Canterbury, what made you decide to go back?

I couldn’t miss the opportunity to get some good first class cricket in before the start of the English summer.  I wanted to get overs under my belt and be ready to hit the ground running come the first game of the year

Is the set up different to Durham?

It’s a very similar set up over there.   Their squad is much smaller than ours but the way things are run is quite similar.

What’s the training/playing schedule like?

I am there for four one day games and they are played on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s so we have a good chance to get some training in between those games and then there are some four day games that I am looking forward to getting into again

How did you feel making your first class debut for them?

It was a great honour.  The coach gave a little speech and then presented me with the cap they wear.  It was a good game to start in as we had a really big win, it was the biggest win against that team, and I felt good because I picked up some wickets.   It was also the game I broke my finger before in two places when I was batting, that hurt, but has healed quite nicely now!

You took a few wickets in your first game so you must feel confident going back into this format?

I got six wickets in my first four day game for them so it was good to start like that, it gave me confidence and helped me settle in.

Does your bowling style suit the conditions over there?

Yeah I think it does.  The wickets I have played on there had good pace and bounce so for my style of bowling that’s what I like to see!  Our home ground is flat so I will relish the challenge there.

Are you making any changes to your game during the winter?

Yeah I have some things I have been working on over the winter so far.  These are things I spoke to Geoff about at the end of last season so I’ll be looking to work on them as much as I can.  I am  also working hard on my batting and fielding and working with their fitness guy who is a machine!   His nickname is Mad Max so that should be fun….

Have you set yourself any targets for your time there?

Just to work as hard as I can and to lead the attack.  I am really looking forward to the challenge of leading the attack and becoming a better bowler for the experience.  Any player’s ultimate goal is to play for their country so I really want to make that next step to be in contention to play for England.  To get near that level I’d have played some great cricket for Durham which would hopefully coincide with more success for our Club.

Who is your favourite team mate at Canterbury?

I’m not naming names!  I get along with all the lads, they are a really good bunch of blokes who love their cricket.

Who do you miss most from Durham during the winter?

I just really miss the north east when I’m away, it’s such a great place and somewhere I call home.  I am looking forward to getting back and being around the lads again and hopefully winning back that trophy!
