Brydon Carse set for first appearance of the summer as Durham head to Leicestershire

Ryan Campbell has named a squad of 13 as Durham head to the East Midlands to take on Leicestershire Foxes in the Vitality Blast tomorrow at 6:30pm.

Brydon Carse is in line to make his first Durham appearance of the summer having recovered from the hand injury he sustained in the nets with Sunrisers Hyderabad in mid April.

David Bedingham and Ben Raine aren’t included in the 13 and won’t travel to Leicestershire – as the Durham duo are rested for Durham’s tenth match of the competition.

Luke Robinson is in line to play his first Vitality Blast match since 2023 – which also came against Leicestershire Foxes at Grace Road, having last played T20 cricket for Durham against the Eagles in Zimbabwe in 2024.

Campbell’s side sit fourth in the Vitality Blast North Group after defeat to Notts Outlaws on Sunday at Banks Homes Riverside and will be looking to respond with their fourth win of the campaign.

Durham take on a Foxes side who sit one spot below them in fifth having also won three games, also having 12 points on the board.

Words from Ryan Campbell

It’s been a disappointing weekend and it the Notts Outlaws defeat sums us up. When we’ve had an opportunity to win a tight game, we haven’t got it right.

We’re playing the best team in the competition, we’ve put ourselves in a position to win and again we haven’t got there. That’s frustrating.

We’re probably out of this competition now but we’re not a million miles away. I reckon that’s four games now that with just a little bit of polish, we’d have got over the line and been sailing. But that’s T20.

I think we will go some youngsters an opportunity against Leicestershire, James Minto will be away with England Under 19s but Luke Robinson comes into contention, Shafiqullah Ghafari might be someone we talk about and there may be some others we look at – with the way we are in this competition I think we will look to mix it up and give people a chance.

Squad v Leicestershire Foxes (9 July)

Kasey Aldridge, Brydon Carse, Graham Clark, Colin Ackermann, Alex Lees, Ben McKinney, Shafiqullah Ghafari, Callum Parkinson, Nathan Sowter, Will Rhodes, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson+, Luke Robinson

Captain: Ben Green.

Overseas players: Ashton Turner (Australia, all), Ajaz Patel (New Zealand, all), Ruan de Swardt (South Africa – final three games)

Finals Day appearances: Five (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2011)

Titles: Three (2004, 2006, 2011)

2025 finish: 7th in North Group

2025 leading run-scorer: Sol Budinger (358)

2025 leading wicket-taker: Logan van Beek (22)

Key winter moves: The Foxes have recruited well from overseas and at home with five-times Big Bash League winning and former Durham all-rounder Ashton Turner their marquee signing, along with New Zealand batter Nick Kelly and left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. Domestic arrivals Ben Green and Josh Davey are both Vitality Blast winners with Somerset, while Stephen Eskinazi is a Big Bash winner with Turner’s Perth Scorchers.

The big question: The Foxes have a storied history in this competition but have been underwhelming in recent seasons. This summer, though, they will have a lot of winning experience to call on after a busy winter of recruitment. After winning the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and the Division Two title in recent seasons, can Leicestershire now silence their doubters in this format too?

Wildcard watch: After missing out on a gig in The Hundred last summer, Rishi Patel will be eager to put matters right this time. A player with a 41-ball T20 century to his name, the elegant right-hand batter will hope he can carry forward his good early season red-ball form and make a big impact in the short format.

Final thought: Ben Green has led something of a double life the last couple of years, becoming a red-ball favourite during several spells on loan at Uptonsteel Grace Road, while at the same time remaining a key part of Somerset’s Vitality Blast line-up, with whom he reached four finals in five years, winning two of them.  After finally signing him on a permanent deal, the Foxes wasted no time in making him their T20 captain. It could be one of their shrewdest decisions.

The Club’s match centre will be in operation for the fixture with live scorecards, statistics & video highlights as they happen.
