Bresnan hails Colly’s T20 impact

Bresnan was part of the side that won the tournament in the West Indies six years ago, and believes Colly’s captaincy in 2010 played a vital role in reinventing England’s approach to the shortened format.

Reflecting on the tournament, which England won by beating Australia by seven wickets in the final, Bresnan says: “The general theme was to be as aggressive at what we did as possible.

“In encouraging that, Colly effectively ushered in a new era of limited-overs cricket.

“He was the driving force behind the way we played. In every team talk he used very positive language, and there was certainly going to be no fear of failure from us during that tournament.

“As a batsman if you thought you could take a bowler down, you just took him down. And to be fair to Colly, he practiced what he preached.”

Speaking to The Cricketer magazine’s Richard Gibson ahead of this year’s competition, the 31-year-old likened Collingwood’s attitude to that of New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum, who recently retired from the international scene after a glittering 12-year career with the Black Caps.

And he can also spot a familiar pattern emerging under current skipper Eoin Morgan, who Bresnan believes brings strengths to the role similar to Collingwood in 2010.

“(Colly) led from the front all tournament and undoubtedly gained everyone else’s respect,” he says.

“His attitude undoubtedly rubbed off on others. Setting fields, he left slips in longer than other captains dared and kept looking to get the opposition batsmen out, not just contain them.

“He was like Brendan McCullum five years ahead of his time.

“We were so well rehearsed. We didn’t worry about our opponents’ strengths, we just worried about our own.

“When first I was captained by Eoin Morgan I saw a lot of what he was doing as familiar.

“His style of captaincy and that of Collingwood shares a similar vibe, and if they can maintain that same sort of mentality I am expecting big things from England.”

Meanwhile, Collingwood himself insists England’s current crop have no-one to fear in India, and has hailed the impact made by Morgan and his players in limited-overs cricket.

“Everybody who’s been watching the white-ball form of the game over the past year has probably been surprised about how quickly we’ve turned things around,” says Colly in an interview with The Telegraph’s Jonathan Liew.

“Eoin Morgan’s captaincy has been exceptional as well. We’ve made great strides in getting our white-ball cricket to a different level from what it’s ever been. It’s as exciting as at any time in England’s history.

“We can beat the best teams. We’ve proven that. Enjoying our cricket is going to be a huge factor. It’s not all about technical stuff. Sometimes the bravest team will go out and win the thing.

“You don’t win things by being conservative, and this team has certainly not been conservative.”
