Benkenstein: I needed a bit of luck

After a winter away from the field, Dale was determined to get a big score posted as early into the season as possible, “I just wanted to score. I haven’t played in the winter and I felt a little bit different, I just really needed a bit of time in the middle.   I needed a bit of luck and you can always do with that” said Benkenstein who was dropped by Kieswetter on 5.

“Their bowlers are pretty skilful and the ball swung and did a little bit most of the day.  I think they bowled really well through a period to Much and myself and you needed a little bit of luck and we had a little bit of luck to get through that.  They were right on it, a couple of wickets and they would have justified their decision to field first but instead it’s been a good day for us.  There’s still Colonel to come and the bowlers, Thorpy, Mitch and Harmy can also bat a bit so there’s still a bit of batting left.

Gordon Muchall picked up his second successive half century, after a strong partnership with Benkenstein, “It’s been good for him and he’s settling into that position.  He’s got that opportunity now and he’s at least taken it and he’s looking good”, added Dale.

Michael Di Venuto and Ian Blackwell also posted half centuries, “Blackie is a class bloke, he’s got an amazing record. Coming in at number six he can come in in either role, make the game go away from the opposition when you’re in trouble or put up a good score if it’s a flat wicket so I think he’s going to be a huge asset to us”, said Benkenstein.
