Ben Stokes Blog 2 – We’re in the quarter finals!

“I was over the moon to get the century.  It was my first time batting in the actual competition and it was great to go out there and get some runs under my belt.  I’d gone in at a difficult point in the game, we were 60-4, and could feel the pressure of the situation.  We [me and Atiq Javed] managed to strike up a good partnership in the middle and set a platform for us to be able to reach the score that had been set.  It’s the first time I’ve had to re-build an innings to make sure a team got a decent total.

“We had spent a lot of time training in the nets before and during the competition and I’d felt good so it was just a case of going into the middle and applying what I’d been working on.  I definitely put in a good all round performance, I was really pleased to pick up a couple of wickets too.  Although I wasn’t entirely happy with my consistency, I was hitting the lengths well and on the whole I’m feeling really good for the game on Saturday.  I’m going in to the match feeling confident and so is the team.

“I had some family at the ground watching the game. Once we had won I got loads of texts from home saying ‘Congratulations’ and that was really nice.

“Everyone has performed really well and as a team we’ve been chuffed at the way we’ve performed so far, winning every game and topping the group A table.  We’ve gone into every game believing that we can win and if everyone performs to the best of their ability against the West Indies we will come out on top.  We’re approaching the quarter final game the same way as we have the rest, with confidence and with plenty of preparation in our training.

“Once the competition got underway we haven’t had very much free time so we’ve really just been spending time in town and finding something to do together as a team.  We had a bit of a chat with the Bangladesh U19’s as we toured there before Christmas and got to know a few of the other guys.  Obviously our main focus is the competition so we’re all just waiting for that all important next game! “

We’ll catch up with Ben again soon so keep an eye out for blog number three!
