Beach Party as Chester-le-Street welcomes Investec Ashes

Six tonnes of sand, giant deckchairs, sand sculptures and seaside entertainment will transform the town’s Market Place into the coast as part of celebrations to welcome the 80,000 fans arriving to watch England take on Australia.

The carnival atmosphere, stretching from the town centre to Riverside Park comes complete with live music, stilt walkers, face painting, Punch and Judy, vintage cars displays and street theatre.

It has all been organised by Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership (AAP), Durham County Cricket Club and the local Business Association.

Andrew Megginson, AAP Coordinator, explains: “This is a huge global sporting event taking place on our doorstep and we want to ensure everyone has a good time. We want them to enjoy their stay and visit the shops, bars and restaurants in the town. It is also a bit of fun for local residents and their families.”

The four-day fun and games coincide with the start of the big match on Friday August 9 and run until Monday, 12 August. The vintage vehicles, supplied by Beamish Museum, roll into town on Sunday, 11 August.

Live music and street entertainment will be the backdrop to supporters making their way to and from the Emirates Durham ICG along Front Street and Riverside Park.

Joyce Roberts, chair of Chester-le-Street Business Association, added:  “This is a one-off opportunity to showcase the town to a worldwide audience, benefit local retailers and give residents and visitors a good time.”
