13 in contention as Durham Women look to bounce back against Surrey at Beckenham

Durham Women head to Beckenham to face Surrey on Wednesday, looking to bounce back from defeat against The Blaze on Sunday.

Danielle Hazell has named a squad of 13 for the trip down south with Grace Thompson dropping out from the 14-player squad named to face The Blaze.

Sophia Turner is in line for her Durham List A debut whilst Trudy Johnson and Mia Rogers remain in contention.

Emily Windsor has undergone surgery on a hip injury and will work on her recovery with the Durham Cricket Science and Medicine team.

Lauren Filer and Lizzie Scott also remain unavailable for selection due to injury.

Durham face a Surrey side who lost their opening two fixtures against Lancashire and Hampshire but have the likes of Dani Wyatt-Hodge, Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey amongst their ranks.

Words from Danielle Hazell

There was a huge point at about 35 overs in the first innings that really swung the game. Apart from that, I think we showed some smart options at the start. Even with the ball, we fought really hard. But it just wasn’t enough on the board. If you get to 250-260, that’s a very, very different game.

A little bit of a reflection on how we went about it from a spin point of view. But there were a lot of things to take forwards to Wednesday (Surrey at Beckenham).

The two of them (Hollie Armitage and Mady Villiers) batted really well. It was a good wicket. They looked in control. It can be a bit harder to start on. When you earn the right and get in, you can fly. But it’s a little bit disappointing in terms of that last 15 overs.

(On Phoebe Turner) She never gives up. She just keeps running in and is starting to turn into that person that Hollie goes to. It was a really good performance again from Phoebe.

Squad v Surrey (30 April)

Hollie Armitage*, Suzie Bates, Leah Dobson, Katherine Fraser, Abi Glen, Bess Heath+, Trudy Johnson, Katie Levick, Emma Marlow, Mia Rogers, Phoebe Turner, Sophia Turner, Mady Villiers

Opposition Corner

Captain: Bryony Smith

Head Coach: Johann Myburgh

The big questions: Surrey’s predecessors, the South East Stars, were consistently one of the strongest sides in the country, but only had one Charlotte Edwards Trophy to show for it. Will some exceptionally smart new signings in Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Alice Monaghan from the Southern Vipers help them convert a series of second and third-places into silverware?

Player to watch: Alice Capsey is the type of cricketer that can take a game away from the opposition with the bat and ball. After a difficult winter with England, the 20-year-old will be looking to get off to a strong start with her home county to consolidate her position as a key player for England moving forward.

Young gun: Tilly Corteen-Coleman was The Hundred’s youngest-ever player when she made her debut for the Southern Brave last year, aged just 16. She was part of the Stars’ academy and instantly looked at home in the first team.

Final thought: Surrey have plenty of star quality with England players Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Ryana MacDonald-Gay no doubt eager to get to work back in domestic ranks after they were on the winter tour to Australia.

Match Centre

The Club’s match centre will be in operation for the fixture with live scorecards, statistics & video highlights as they happen.
