Brydon Carse’s first Durham five-wicket haul since 2021 and a sublime century from Ben McKinney helped promotion-chasing Durham take control of their Rothesay County Championship clash with Middlesex.
The visitors made a good start to the day, as they saw out a challenging opening hour with the bat. Durham then struck back with four wickets in the second half of the morning session, with Ben Raine picking up two of them.
The hosts picked up where they left off after lunch and Carse wrapped up the tail to secure his first County Championship five-wicket haul since 2021 and bowl out Middlesex for 203, a deficit of 49.
Durham then took the upper hand as they made an excellent start to their second innings, with Alex Lees and McKinney combining for an opening stand worth 81. McKinney then passed three figures and Durham closed on 204 for two, leading by 253 runs.
Durham’s performance on the second day has given them a platform to win the game, a result which would seal their return to Division One, while Middlesex have plenty of work to do if they are to take something from their visit to the North East.
Resuming on 70 for two, Middlesex were looking to continue their good progress with the bat. Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden chipped away at Durham’s lead in the first half-hour, with conditions challenging for batting.
The pair’s partnership then passed fifty as Durham’s bowlers chipped away with little reward in the opening hour.
However, Kasey Aldridge made the breakthrough shortly after as he removed Max Holden who attempted a drive but he could only edge it straight to third slip. Durham got their fourth wicket soon after, as Will Rhodes made a mess of Fernandes’ stumps.
Raine then got Durham’s fifth wicket as Ben Geddes edged to Colin Ackermann at second slip, who produced his fourth catch of the innings.
Raine then got another on the stroke of lunch, as Ryan Higgins edged one straight to first slip. Durham continued where they left off after the break, with Raine getting Zafar Gohar lbw.
Carse then got his third of the innings as he got Seb Morgan lbw for a duck. Harry Duke and Tom Helm frustrated Durham with a 40-run partnership but Carse got Helm caught behind.
Carse then wrapped up the innings as he got Naavya Sharma lbw, with the hosts securing a 49-run first innings lead.
Lees and McKinney got Durham’s second innings off to a solid start, with the pair finding the boundary at regular intervals.
The Durham openers notched up their fifty partnership and continued to build their lead as it passed three figures. Alex Lees then fell as he was bowled by Ryan Higgins, but McKinney continued his good start as he passed fifty.
Rhodes joined McKinney at the crease and looked assured with a lovely cut shot from the former bringing up the pair’s fifty partnership.
McKinney continued to look good in the middle, as he scored heavily through the offside, and the left-handed opener helped his side extend their lead past 200.
Middlesex hit back as Rhodes was caught at gully off the bowling of Seb Morgan, but that didn’t stop McKinney making his third century of the summer and he got there in style with a lovely shot through the covers.
Mayank Agarwal joined McKinney at the crease and the pair saw their side through to close without further loss as bad light brought an early end to the day.
Ben Raine led a Durham fightback with the bat after Seb Morgan’s four wickets had put Middlesex in the driving seat on the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship fixture.
An even morning session burst into life in the final over, with Morgan taking two wickets from three balls to put promotion-chasing Durham in a spot of bother at 80 for four.
Morgan got the key wicket of Durham skipper Alex Lees just after lunch and a rain delay halted Middlesex’s progress for a brief period. Ryan Higgins then picked up the baton upon resumption with three poles.
However, Durham fought back through a final wicket stand of 90 between Raine (58*) and Callum Parkinson (26) before they were bowled out for 252. Brydon Carse then picked up two wickets as Middlesex made a solid start to their reply and they closed on 70 for two, 182 runs behind Durham’s total.
Division Two leaders Durham came into this match knowing that a 17-point haul would be good enough for promotion back to the top tier of the world’s premier red ball competition.
They were put into bat by fourth-placed Middlesex.
Durham got off to a promising start, with openers Lees and Ben McKinney getting a lot of joy with shots through the offside. However, Middlesex struck back as Naavya Sharma got McKinney caught behind.
The impressive Sharma then struck again as Will Rhodes dragged one on to his stumps. Lees broke the shackles as he picked up back-to-back boundaries in a Morgan over, but that was only a brief moment of respite from the visitors’ miserly bowling.
The pressure told as Mayank Agarwal was caught behind off the bowling of Morgan.
The visitors struck again three balls later as Graham Clark became Morgan’s second victim when he edged one straight to second slip. The 19-year old continued his good spell as he managed to get Lees to inside edge a beauty and Harry Duke made no mistake with the catch behind the stumps.
Ollie Robinson and Colin Ackermann managed to negotiate Durham through a challenging period and the players left the field due to rain.
Robinson, who made a fluent cameo upon resumption, was the next wicket to fall as Higgins got him lbw. Kasey Aldridge was the seventh Durham man to fall as Higgins got him caught behind.
Higgins then got his third as Durham’s lower order collapse continued when Carse was caught at point.
Morgan then got his fourth as Ackermann was caught behind, but the visitors were then held up by the final Durham pair of Raine and Parkinson.
Raine played some nice shots as he ticked Durham’s total past 200 before tea. The duo’s stand passed fifty as they continued to frustrate Middlesex’s bowling attack.
Raine then passed the half-century mark for the third time this season to give his side a much-needed boost. Sharma then broke the partnership on 90 as he got Parkinson lbw, with Durham bowled out for 252.
Middlesex had 19 overs to bat as they looked to make a solid start to their reply and they did just that as openers Sam Robson and Luke Hollman opened their boundary accounts early on.
Carse then got the breakthrough as Hollman was caught at third slip, and Durham were close to a second wicket, but they failed to capitalise on a run out opportunity.
Carse picked up another wicket, as Sam Robson edged to third slip. Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden kept their wickets intact as they absorbed plenty of pressure, with the visitors closing on 70 for two.
