Mady Villiers wins women’s PCA Player of the Month for May

Mady Villiers and Martin Andersson have won the PCA Player of the Month awards, thanks to some phenomenal displays with bat and ball in May.

Both players were shortlisted for the awards using the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings, powered by OFX. The unique algorithm selected the top four men’s and women’s players before they faced a public vote, with the winners decided by a 50:50 split between the two.

Villiers secured 123.50 MVP points during the month, earning 80.11 batting points and 28.39 points with the ball, alongside securing 37 per cent of the public vote to win May’s award. The 27-year-old finished ahead of Surrey’s Alice Monaghan in second, who secured a third of the public vote. Somerset’s Sophie Luff finished in third place with Yorkshire’s Jess Jonassen in fourth.

In the men’s game, Martin Andersson earnt 149.18 MVP points in May with 83.35 batting points and 48.03 points with the ball. The 29-year-old claimed 40 per cent of the public vote to finish first with last month’s winner Craig Overton in second place, Glamorgan’s Kiran Carlson in third and Durham’s Ben Raine in fourth.

Villiers wins women’s Player of the Month

A brilliant month of May for Villiers saw her score 262 runs across both formats, averaging 47.33 in the Metro Bank One Day Cup with the bat. The 27-year-old also took 12 wickets across T20 and 50-over cricket, averaging 11.42 with the ball in the Blast.

Earning the Match MVP against Warwickshire, Villiers produced a staggering all-round performance securing 41.68 MVP points for an incredible innings of 106 from 86 balls and figures of 3-38 in the One Day Cup.

The Durham all-rounder’s Blast form has also been strong securing a Match MVP against The Blaze with 47 off 34 balls and 3-21 with the ball.

Having won May’s award, Villiers, said: “It’s a huge honour to be voted for by the public and my peers, it’s amazing.

“It’s nice because my performances have helped us win games, a lot of the time you can do well and your team doesn’t win but I’ve been contributing to Durham wins which is great.

“It’s something that I wanted to do this year to get my first hundred, so I’m really proud of that 106 against Warwickshire.

“I’ve been given a bit more responsibility and I wanted to be the person to win games for Durham, it really gets the best out of me.

“It’s something that doesn’t come around too often to do well with bat and ball so you look to cash in when that is happening.

“We want to get to Finals Day and we’re getting ourselves in position to win games, that’s a big goal and there’s still a long way to go in the Metro Bank.

Andersson showing his class with May award

Andersson amassed 395 runs across both formats in May averaging 56.4 with the bat and taking 15 wickets. The 29-year-old’s form in the Vitality Blast has been impeccable, scoring 237 runs at an average of 79 and taking 11 wickets at 13.5.

The Derbyshire all-rounder’s standout performance came in the Blast against Leicestershire where he smashed 57 off 29 balls and then took career-best figures of 6-23, including an unbelievable split-second caught and bowled. Andersson claimed 60.03 MVP points for that game and rightly earnt the Match MVP.

Andersson’s batting keeps going from strength to strength, impressing again in the Rothesay County Championship against Northamptonshire with an innings of 106.

On winning the award, Andersson, said: “It’s been a great month. The Leicestershire game was just one of those days when everything fell my way, wickets kept coming and you’ve got to take it when days like that come – it was pretty special. I hadn’t bowled in the competition before that so to then take a six-fer was mad.

“I watched the catch back and I’m not sure how I caught it but it just stuck, which was ridiculous

“I got off to a good start this year in the Championship and we’ve got a good group, the results haven’t quite gone our way yet but we’ve got some games coming up where we can turn that around.

“I’ve felt really strong with the bat since joining Derbyshire, it helps that it’s a good batting deck but it’s really nice to be contributing with the bat.

“It’s a nice feeling that people have voted for me, it means a lot so thanks to everyone that voted.”
