With the opening block of Rothesay County Championship fixtures complete, Director of Cricket Marcus North has praised Durham’s strong start to the season as attention turns to Friday’s Vitality Blast opener.
Durham sit top of Division Two with 105 points, holding a 20-point advantage over second place heading into the white-ball break.
“Our members and supporters will be delighted with how we’ve started the County Championship,” said North. “To be top of the table with a healthy lead at this stage is very pleasing.
“It’s still early in the season and there’s a long way to go, but we’ve laid strong foundations. Our objective for 2026 is clear, promotion back to Division One and everything we’re doing is geared towards achieving that.”
North acknowledged there remains room for growth despite the impressive opening two months.
“We’ve played some very good cricket, but we know we can improve further. That’s the exciting part there’s more to come from this group.”
Individual performances have also drawn recognition at international level. Emilio Gay has earned his maiden Test call-up following an outstanding start to the campaign, adding to his impressive England Lions displays over the winter and against India last summer.
Ben McKinney has also been selected once again for England Lions duty, featuring in the upcoming series against South Africa.
“We’re incredibly proud to see Emilio receive his first Test call-up it’s thoroughly deserved,” North added.
“Ben’s continued recognition with England Lions is also a testament to his consistency and development.”
North also highlighted the impact of Durham’s emerging talent in the red-ball format.
“Luke Robinson and James Minto have already had opportunities and both performed with real credit in the County Championship. The progress of our younger players is extremely exciting and very important for the long-term future of the Club.”
Focus now shifts to the Vitality Blast, where Durham are aiming to build on consecutive quarter-final appearances.
“We’ve had two strong T20 campaigns, reaching back-to-back quarter-finals, and we’re determined to compete strongly again this year,” said North.
“With the depth we have in the squad, now is the right time to continue investing in our young players to give them meaningful opportunities in the T20 side to accelerate their development.”
Potts, Raine, Parkinson and Sowter are expected to play significant roles with the ball throughout the campaign, while Bedingham, Lees, Clark will be central to Durham’s batting line up. The South African batter will be the Club’s sole overseas player for the tournament and is available for its entirety.
“David has been an exceptional performer for us and will be a key figure in our T20 campaign,” North said.
“There’s real depth across the group, and competition for places is healthy,” North added.
We’re ready for Friday and excited for what promises to be another important campaign in our 2026 season.”
