Ds Abroad: Stokes & McKinney star in Ashes prep, Bowman leads the way in the World Junior League; Abi Glen in the runs and wickets

With pre-season now underway many of the Durham squad are spending their winter in sunnier climates playing overseas. 

A regular feature on the Durham website throughout the winter will be recapping how the Durham players get on.

There were six members of the Durham squad in action as England took on the England Lions in their final preparation for The Ashes in Australia. Ben Stokes starred with the ball taking 6/50 in the first innings before adding 84 with the bat.

Ben McKinney shone with 66 and 68 for England Lions whilst Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts claimed three wickets apiece with Mark Wood and Emilio Gay also featuring.

Robbie Bowman and Luke Symington enjoyed successful campaigns in the World Junior League in the United Arab Emirates, finishing as runners-up with the London House Kings. Bowman captained the side, leading from the off with two fifties and impressing with the gloves whilst Symington also made his mark with the bat with some lusty blows.

Abi Glen was in the runs and wickets for South Perth in their defeat to Subiaco-Floreat. Glen led the way with figures of 2/34 from 10 overs as the hosts racked up 308/3 from 50 overs before adding a run-a-ball 34 from number three with the visitors falling to defeat by 129 runs.

Haydon Mustard has been in the runs for Murdoch University Melville Cricket Club. Mustard made 45 from 42 balls in the T20 win over Swanbourne whilst making 34 in their two-day clash against the same side.

Scotland lifted the Quad Cup in Thailand with Katherine Fraser taking part in all three victories. Fraser took one pole against Papa New Guinea before claiming 2/13 against Thailand, also partaking against Namibia. The Scots face Uganda in their Emerging Nations Trophy opener, starting Thursday 20 November.

Mia Rogers starred behind the stumps with four catches for Geelong in their convincing One Day win over Dandenong. Rogers added 19 not out as the hosts made 253/2 from 44 overs before dismissing the visitors for 121.

Daniel Hogg claimed two wickets on the opening day of Western Suburbs’ two-day encounter with Ocean Ridge. Hogg returned figures of 2/8 in 7.4 overs taking two late scalps as the visitors were bowled out for 123.

Mady Villiers helped the Sydney Sixers to two wins from their opening three games in the Women’s Big Bash League pairing an unbeaten 24 with two economical overs for just seven runs in victory over Sydney Thunder.

James Minto was in action for England Under 19s claiming one wicket against Grenada before featuring in the series opener against the West Indies.
