14 in contention as Durham round off One Day Cup campaign against Warwickshire in Chester-le-Street

Durham will be looking to round off their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign in winning ways when they take on Warwickshire at Banks Homes Riverside tomorrow at 11am.

Sunday’s clash on home soil will be Durham’s last 50-over game of the season with qualification into the Quarter Final not possible for Durham.

A squad of 14 has been named to face the Bears as Durham take on a Warwickshire side who will be looking to push for a place in the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Luke Robinson returns to the squad with Codi Yusuf dropping out.

Warwickshire are missing seven players to the Hundred with Sam Hain, Jacob Bethell, Dan Mousley, George Garton, Richard Gleeson, Danny Briggs and Chris Woakes all on franchise duty throughout August.

Going into the final round of games for Durham, Campbell side sit in 6th place, with Warwickshire in 3rd.

Bas de Leede, Daniel Hogg, Haydon Mustard and Paul Coughlin remain unavailable for selection due to injury and continue to be monitored by Durham’s Science and Medicine department.

Words from Ryan Campbell

Look, credit to Yorkshire, they played really well. They batted nicely, obviously, and we couldn’t stem the tide. It’s unfortunately been the signature of our tournament so far. The run chase was always going to be difficult, and it just didn’t go our way. Three maidens to start wasn’t ideal, that’s for sure.

We had a good run chase against Lancashire, earlier in the week, (321 v Lancashire), and we understood what we needed to do. But we couldn’t execute. We lost wickets early, they bowled well, and we were a bit timid I reckon up front.

It breaks your heart that we pride ourselves on being a lot better than what we’ve shown in this competition, and we need to find a way to bounce back very quickly.

Whenever you represent Durham (Sunday v Warwickshire), there’s never nothing riding on it. We’ve got a lot to prove to ourselves.

We have to get guys back in form. We have a massive month in September, and we need to be ready for that. Sunday’s a great opportunity for us to get back on track.

George Drissell, I thought bowled really well. Amongst the chaos, he went for 48. Most of those runs came in his last over when it was going crazy. He’s a young player we have a lot of faith in.

We’ve seen him get opportunities in red-ball this year, and he’s trying to push his way to be our number one spinner. He needs to back it up continually with bat and ball. If he can do that, he’s a bloody good asset for us.

Squad v Warwickshire (24 August)

Colin Ackermann, Archie Bailey, Scott Borthwick, Robbie Bowman, Sam Conners, George Drissell, Emilio Gay, Mitchell Killeen, Alex Lees, James Minto, Ben Raine, Will Rhodes, Luke Robinson, Ollie Robinson*+

Opposition Corner

Captain: Ed Barnard

2024 Position: Semi-finals

2024 Most Runs: Ed Barnard (433)

2024 Most Wickets: Ed Barnard (19)

Why they can win the competition: Semi-finalists last season, Warwickshire have some talented young players who drive the team in this competition. A year on from the under-performance in the last four against Glamorgan at Cardiff, those emerging players are more experienced and better-equipped to handle the bigger, make-or-break games.

Player to watch: Kai Smith. The wicketkeeper batter is pushing hard to become a regular in all formats. Solid behind the stumps, he bats with a freedom and power which can transform games. His unbeaten 130 from 104 balls against Worcestershire at Edgbaston in this competition last season was a scintillating exhibition of how to turn pressure back on the opposition.

Young gun: Hamza Shaikh. Although only just turned 19, top-order batter Shaikh has some first-team cricket under his belt now in both first-class and 50-over formats. His 84 and 112 as captain of England Men U19s against India at Beckenham last month suggests he is ready to take the next step and deliver match-shaping innings for his county.

Final thought: Ian Westwood’s first season as head coach at Edgbaston has contained some promising signs – Warwickshire have delivered some eye-catching Rothesay County Championship wins and qualification for the Vitality Blast quarter-finals. To lift the Metro Bank One-Day Cup would assure supporters that their side is settling again after the long period of transition since winning the 2021 County Championship – and also underline Ed Barnard’s credentials to be the next club captain.
