It is with great sadness to learn the passing of former Durham and Australian cricketer Dean Jones, the clubs first overseas player.
Dean was a member of the Durham squad during 1992 representing the club in its first year as a First-Class county making his debut against Oxford University scoring an unbeaten 36 from 43 balls.
Jones who represented the club on 34 occasions in both First-Class and Sunday League cricket scored over 2000 runs for the club and was a fan favourite within the county.
His First-Class average of 73 is Durham’s second-highest, his Sunday League average was an impressive 82.
Dean sadly passed away in India following a cardiac arrest, at the age of 59. He was currently working in Mumbai for the 2020 Indian Premier League.
Dean Jones played 52 Tests and 164 ODIs for Australia during an international career which spanned eight years from 1984 to 1992. During his career he amassed 3631 runs in red-ball cricket with 11 centuries and 14 half-centuries. While in one-day internationals he posted 6068 runs with 7 hundreds and 46 fifties, at 44.61.
