Yorkshire T20 Blast washed out

Durham’s Vitality Blast T20 fixture at Headingley was abandoned without a ball bowled this evening.

Rain forced the abandonment of this televised North Group fixture at 5pm, with the writing on the wall much earlier in the afternoon when the White Rose county published their Olympic swimmer inspired quip alongside a photograph of water on the covers just after 2.30pm.

These two sides had to settle for a point apiece for the second time this summer after an early season Royal London one-day Cup fixture was blighted at Headingley, albeit that time having started.

The quarter-final hopes of both counties have been dented as a result, but it seems unlikely that bottom side Yorkshire will be able to rectify their issues having only won once in 10 games.

They remain rooted to the foot of the North Group table having lost four times added to four No Results and a tie.

Durham remain firmly in the hunt for a top four finish for the second year running having won four and lost five of 11 games. This was their second No Result.

They are likely to end the night, pending other results, just one point away from the qualification places.

Yorkshire should head into the closing stages of the group campaign three points adrift of the top four.

But, given the amount of teams above them, it seems like victory in all of their remaining four fixtures would be their only chance of quarter-final cricket for the first time since 2016 when they were beaten semi-finalists against Durham at Edgbaston.

Yorkshire only have one game remaining at Headingley and are yet to win at their headquarters in this season’s Blast.

Both counties return to Specsavers County Championship action on Sunday before resuming their Blast campaign against each other under the floodlights at Emirates Riverside next Friday night (6.30pm start).
