Cook: We need to win the next five games

Durham Dynamos posted a total of 155 to defend, with the opening partnership putting on 50 in just five overs.  Once Mustard was dismissed, caught by White off Pattinson for 35, the Dynamos lost five wickets that added just 40 runs between them to the total.

Albie Morkel nudged the Dynamos past the hundred mark in the 15th over and in partnership with Will Smith added 38 before was caught by Wood off Nannes for 28 leaving the Dynamos 146-8.

A few big hits from Ben Harmison and Liam Plunkett in the closing stages saw Durham set Notts a target of 156 for victory.

The Dynamos attack started well with Albie Morkel picking up two wickets within the first three overs and the bowlers restricting the Outlaws to 26-2 after 5 overs.

A  fifty partnerships, between Wood and Patel put the Outlaws in contention after the loss of the two openers but by the fifteenth over Notts were 100-6 .

The Durham bowlers couldn’t pick up the vital wicket to break up the pair in the middle in the last stages and Hussey’s Man of the Match performance, 47* off 35 balls and his fifty partnership with White, gave the Outlaws the two points with three balls to spare.

After the match Head Coach Geoff Cook said, “I think that’s the nature of cricket generall, especially in cricket of this length, it just takes five overs of inspiration from one of teh cricketers to turn the game and today the two players in the middle for the last five overs played great, White, who’s not a recognised batsman came in and played probably the twenty20 innings of his life and Hussey, who’s one of the best finishers in twenty20 cricket in the world, combined nicely to put fifty odd on in five overs.

“It’s easy when you have the game in your hand to look back at the last five overs but in reality we could and should have put the game out of reach for them from overs seven to 15, when we were 50-1 and went on to lose five or six wickets very quickly.  Hats off to our tail, Albie Morkel, Will Smith and a couple of big blows from Liam Plunkett and Ben Harmison that pushed us up to 155 and gave us a chance.

“We’ve got to win the next five games, we keep talking about getting a bit of a run and trying to gain some momentum and we have to do it tomorrow against Northants. There’s a lot of talking and a lot of planning going on in t20 cricket but in the end it boils down to individuals taking responsibility when the pressure is on and turning possible winning performances into winning performances.”
