Bushnell scores half-century as Boys’ Academy defeat Crook in NEPL

Durham Cricket Academy continued their fine start to the North East Premier League Banks Salver West group, with a six wicket win over Crook on Sunday.

Having lost the toss, Durham Academy were asked to field, with the home side putting on an opening partnership of 50 as Andrew Pratt and Steve Chapman opened up for Crook. Pratt was the first to fall – being bowled for 18 from Sebastian Hughes-Pinan.

Bobby Green fell, 20 runs later for 11 and then Max Whinskill had Chapman caught by Rhys Ditta for 55 from 70 balls with eight fours.

Once Champan fell, Whinskill and Jack Scott bowled tight in the middle overs, as the hosts found themselves 131/6. Whinskill claiming 3/26 and Scott (1/25).

Stewart Newton was next in and was looking to try and score big, he added 23 from 29 balls with three fours but Hughes-Pinan had him caught, also dismissing Andrew Burgess for 1. Hughes-Pinan returned figures of 3/27 from his seven overs.

Stanley McAlindon picked up two late wickets, to get rid of Crook’s number eight and nine, closing with figures of 2/29 from six overs. Crook closing their 40 overs on 168/9.

An opening stand of 63 from Ben McKinney and Jonathan Bushnell got the Academy off to a positive reply, in search of 169.

Bushnell led the way in reply with a 68 ball 58 with eight fours and one six supported by 26 from McKinney.

Rhys Ditta (19) and Ross Whitfield (13) both chipped in but Robbie Dawson (27*) and Jack McCarthy (17*) closed unbeaten, as the Academy young guns won by six wickets in 35.5 overs.

The boy’s academy remain in top spot with two games in the North East Premier League remaining – games coming up against Washington and Burnopfield.
